Her Big City Neighbor

Her Big City Neighbor by Jackie Lau

Book 1 in the Cider Bar Sisters Series

Contemporary Romance

Overall Rating: 3.5

I received a free copy of this book. I did not have to do anything, but I chose to review it because I liked it and wanted to share why with you.

Picture of Cover of the book Her Big City Neighbor. A handsome Asian man has a yellow sign with the title in between his arm and right side of his body. Outlines of houses are in the background that is blue-green.

Quick Summary: Amy Sharpe is excited to move to the big city after spending years ignoring her own goals in favor of her family. Inheriting her aunt’s house is bittersweet, but Amy is excited to go back to school and earn her Master’s Degree. It doesn’t hurt that her new neighbor is hot. Like smokin’ hot. And her new friends are the best a girl could ask for. But when her neighbor expresses interest in her, is it more than just a fling?

Amy is a very lovable character and Victor is exactly the grumpy hero I like. Amy is a sweet combination of happy and fearless, so even though she’s a bubblegum kind of character, she isn’t one dimensional. My favorite part of any Jackie Lau book is the time spent on each character’s backstory. Sure, the characters often fall into a trope, i.e. grumpy hero, but there’s a reason. And it’s following the reason to the resolution that make the books so much fun to read.

This book is like drinking a warm cup of hot cocoa. It’s sweet and satisfying, and hits exactly the right spot. I’m looking forward to reading the other books in this new series.

Is it worth buying? (Kindle $3.99)

This is probably my favorite of all of the Jackie Lau book’s I’ve read, so I definitely recommend buying it.

Something else you might enjoy:

I love Sabrina Bowen books. I have yet to meet a Bowen book that I haven’t like. Her True North series is set on an apple orchard/farm with a brewery thrown in, so it has some similar elements, but isn’t exactly the same. Try Fireworks, book 6 in the series. It’s a little darker than Jackie Lau’s books, but you will be totally enthralled!

REVIEW OF The Reality of Everything by Rebecca Yarros

Book 5 in the Flight & Glory Series

Contemporary Romance

I received a free copy of this book. I decided to review it because I know some of you like to have your heart torn from your body, then shoved back in filled with hope, love, and giddiness. This review will also be on my blog: http://www.loveserially.wordpress.com.

Overall Rating: 4

Quick Summary: Morgan Bartley is running away from her past. She’s bought a new house, sight unseen, to try and fix it (and her heart) up. Of course, she knows exactly nothing about renovating a house, but since she’s drowning in money she never asked for and certainly doesn’t want, she knows it’s only a matter of time before the house is beautiful again. Her heart? She has doubts. But her cute neighbors refuse to let her hide away in her torn apart house. And it isn’t long before she faces her past to conquer more than a few fears.

This is my first Rebecca Yarros book and I’m totally hooked! This woman can write!! I was utterly captivated by the characters, dialogue, and emotional waves of the novel; I could not put it down. I have not read any of the other books in the series, so you can trust me when I saw it stands alone. Warning: it will make you want to read the first 4 books in the series though—I know I do!

Perhaps my favorite component of this book is Morgan. She is brave, vulnerable, and a kick ass heroine. I love the ending of the novel. It was completely unexpected and brought me to tears. Plus, the strength of the friendships and the complexity of the secondary characters is amazing. This book really has it all.

Is it worth buying? (Kindle $3.99)

Yes! This is 100% a standalone book. I read it without reading any of the other books in the series and loved it. You will too!

Something else you might enjoy:

Annie Rains is an author that I haven’t read extensively of, but her book, Welcome to Forever, shares a lot of similarities to The Reality of Everything. Military hero, single dad, and small seaside town with a strong heroine. I think you’ll enjoy this one too.

Excerpt:

“Don’t stop.” She reached for my belt again, this time completely undoing it, the button of my pants, and my zipper at world-record speed.

Her phone buzzed. Then it chimed. Then it buzzed and chimed two more times. Then it rang again. Reba.

Cursing, Jenn pulled the phone from her pocket, once again her face illuminated, murderous rage in her eyes. Her finger moved to the power off button. She blinked, hesitating. Her eyes widened, her body stiffened, and she gasped.

“Cletus!”

Something about her tone, like she was horrified, and maybe a little afraid, cut through the heavy haze of lust inertia, and my hands stilled. Shaking myself, it took me a few moments to realize she was showing me the phone screen, and another few to bring the content of the text messages into focus.

Momma: Jennifer Anne Sylvester, pick up your phone. If you’re with Cletus, I need his help. Please.

Momma: ALL THE CHICKENS AND ROOSTERS ARE DEAD! PICK UP YOUR DAMN PHONE!

Momma: I’m calling you in a second, pick up the phone. Mr. Badcock’s chickens are dead. All of them. I got here and he’s running around, deranged, yelling about his dead chickens! I called the police and they’re on their way. Please, please, please pick up the phone!

At some point, I must’ve taken the phone from Jenn and stepped away, because I glanced up upon reading the messages for the third time, finding the phone in my hand and Jenn fixing her skirt.

“This is nuts.” Her big eyes searched mine imploringly. “Who could have done this?”

I shook my head, having not yet managed to fully shift head gears—you know, from that head to the one on my neck—and my gaze dropped to the wet patch on the front of her dress just visible in the swath of light. My erection throbbed.

So we’re . . . not having sex?

“Why? Why would they do it? And WHO?” She snatched her phone back, her tone bewildered, distracted, and distraught. She was distraught because of the dead chickens, like any normal person would be.

I was distraught also, but my distress had nothing to do with farm animals.

“We have to go.” Jenn grabbed my hand and began walking toward the direction of the hall. Meanwhile, it took me until her hand found the door handle to realize my zipper and belt were still undone.

“This is crazy.” She paused as I zipped up, her tone halting and distracted. “Poor Mr. Badcock. And those poor chickens.” A sound of distress escaped her throat. “This is terrible.”

It was terrible.

And I was going to hell.

Because all I could think was, Talk about a cock block.

The Book Behind the KonMari Phenomena

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo

Nonfiction

Overall Rating: 4

Picture of the front cover of Marie Kondo's book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing.

Quick Summary: Take everything out of your closets and drawers and go through them, one-by-one, to see if they spark joy. It sounds so simple and overwhelming at the same time, and yet Marie Kondo assures you that you need to do this only once, and you’ll never go back to a cluttered, disorganized home again. The KonMari method asks you to go through your things category by category until the only things you have left are things that fill you with joy.

You’ve seen the meme and heard about the Netflix series. I’ve watched all of the Netflix shows myself, have seen the meme regarding only owning 10 books, and I’ve come away truly perplexed. Why has popular culture totally misconstrued the KonMari method? After watching the shows, I decided to read the book based on a friend’s recommendation. She said the book is much better than the shows and I have to agree!

The book is so necessary to read, if you’re at all interested in this method of decluttering and organizing. The KonMari method is therapy through your things-or at least this is how I describe it to my friends. Marie Kondo asks you to visualize the kind of life you want to live. She asks you to think about how you want to feel when you walk into your house. And she gives you a process in which to create a place you truly want to be. Sure, you can read this book quickly and never delve deeply into your psyche to explore what you really want your life to be. But, like most things, if you can visualize your goal, then the process becomes much more manageable and easier.

One of my favorite parts of the book are the little insights into Marie Kondo’s life. Evidently, she grew up totally obsessed with cleaning and organizing, and I find that fascinating. She is clearly a very interesting, unique person and has been from the time she was born. She describes how she still gets moments of joy from seeing other people’s clutter, just so she can organize. I find these quirky stories so interesting.

It is worth noting, as others have already mentioned, that Marie Kondo practices Shintoism. In her book, she describes how she used to work at a shrine. She explains, just a little, how all things are worthy of respect and appreciation. It’s not new age woo-wooism. It’s insight into a religious, spiritual practice that goes back centuries and is deeply woven into Japanese culture. Even if you’re not that interested in cleaning your house, you may find this part of the book fascinating.

Is it worth buying? (Kindle $9.99)

I bought a used hard copy because it was convenient. I paid a couple of bucks for it and I think I’ll keep it for the next few years to consult and flip through every now and again. If this is your first foray into the KonMari method and you have Netflix, watch the shows. It will help you decide if you need the book or not. If you decide you want the book, or you’ve watch the shows and want to know more, buy the hard copy. The kindle book is just as expensive as a new hardcover. And, as always, there’s the library.

Something else you might enjoy:

I’ve never read a book about organizing before this. Have you? Do you have one you’d recommend?

Sweet First Book in the Aspen Cove Series

One Hundred Reasons by Kelly Collins

Book 1 in the Aspen Cove Series

Contemporary Romance

Overall Rating: 3

One Hundred Reasons

Quick Summary: Sage Nichols is moving through life without much passion or purpose. Yes, her job as a nurse is important, but the kind of work she’s doing leaves her emotionally drained. When a beloved patient dies and leaves Sage a bed and breakfast, she’s pushed by both her boss and her sister into leaving Denver for the small mountain town of Aspen Cove. When her first encounter with an Aspen Cove native leaves a bad taste in her mouth, Sage struggles against making assumptions and rash decisions.

I really wanted to like this book, and for the most part it was good. Kelly Collins is a great writer, with smooth dialogue and detailed descriptions. There was something missing, however, in the dynamic between Sage and Cannon that prevented me from enthusiastically liking this book. It was missing a kind of deep connection that had nothing to do with flaring tempers or initial misunderstandings. It was more that I was surprised the first time Sage was described as having an attraction to Cannon. There was a jump that I didn’t quite make with the characters.

I’m not sure. I’m probably not explaining it well. What I can positively tell you is that both Cannon and Sage are vulnerable, imperfect people. They’ve been left behind by people they love and they’re scared.

Perhaps this was the area where I didn’t quite feel the full arc of development. Sage is described as having a savior complex at the beginning of the novel, but that doesn’t really gets resolved. And Cannon is described as grumpy and cold, but whether there’s any difference between him at the beginning of the book and at the end, I couldn’t quite say. However, I like that there is a backstory to each of the characters. They had a full life before the book begins, which adds an engaging dimension to the story.

Despite all of the above, by the end of this book I wanted to read the second book in the series. I think this is telling, and should balance out the 3 rating I gave this one. And who knows? We’re in the middle of a pandemic, maybe my rationale isn’t all that rational.

The community of Aspen Cove is vividly described-the family with seven children, the recovering alcoholic, the small-town doctor, and of course, Sage’s friend Katie, the central character of book 2. I can see why there are so many books in this series (14 according to Amazon).

Is it worth buying? (Kindle $3.99)

If you are looking for a lengthy series to read because we’re headed into summer and this virus business isn’t quite done, then you should definitely go for it. The books are also in the Kindle Unlimited program, so if you’re a member, it’s a really good deal (you can’t beat free). You can also check your local library, because it is a nice, light read for evenings spent at home.

Something else you might enjoy:

Jill Shalvis has quite a few series set in small towns. One of my favorites was the Animal Magnetism series, which features a number of adorable animals in addition to the hero and heroine. I’ve read the first three books, leaving four more to go!

FINAL SPOTLESS NOVEL IS OUT!

Island Chaptal and the Ancient Aliens’ Treasure by Camilla Monk

Book 5 in the Spotless Series

*Curious about the other books in this series? You can find Camilla Monk or Spotless in the drop down box, labeled “categories,” to your right.

Romantic Suspense/Romantic Comedy

Overall Rating: 4

Island Chaptal and the ancient aliens'

Quick Summary: Island Chaptal thought her life was settling into a kind of routine with her boyfriend, March November. Life was never gonna be mundane, not with a security company to run, but when Island’s best friend, Joy, gets thrown in jail and Joy’s ex-boyfriend is killed, Island and March’s plans are thrown out the window and they are once again crisscrossing the world to try to save innocent lives. Aliens, pyramids, and sloths are all involved to one hilarious degree or another.

This has been one of my favorite series, primarily because the brand of humor Camilla Monk has is a unique mixture of tongue-in-cheek and out-of-this-world craziness. Her books are the pinnacle of escapism and this story couldn’t have come at a better time.

The relationship between Island and March is beautifully subtle and it anchors the entire plot. No matter how strange and over-the-top the secondary storylines are, Island and March bring a sweetness to the whole book that make this a pleasure to read.

Joy and Angel are also hilarious and I would LOVE for them to have their own book. According to Twitter, Monk does not have plans for a spinoff, but if enough of us petition her, maybe there’s a chance (hint: go bother her on twitter).

Since this review has been sparse on details, other than I love the characters of this book, I will tell you that the writing is strong, dialogue flows smoothly, and the plot has enough twists that I seriously thought we were going to go off into another subgenre. Sadly, I will never be able to enjoy sloths in quite the same way as before reading this book, but it’s a small price to pay for reading a really good book.

Is it worth buying? (Kindle $3.99)

Yes, you really need to read this book. If it means buying it, buy it. If it means borrowing it, force your library to buy it. If it means stealing it… don’t steal it. Book piracy is very bad and I frown heavily on it (not kidding at all).

Something else you might enjoy:

You need to read the entire series. So, settle in for 5 books of crazy fun, with an emphasis on the crazy.

*I received a free copy of this book, for reasons that are beyond me. It did not influence my opinion and I voluntarily decided to share with you my thoughts on this book.

One Hundred Reasons by Kelly Collins

I just heard about this book and this author. I picked this one up today, through Kindle Unlimited (so it’s FREE), and will start to read it as soon as I’m done with my current read. This book is right up my alley, especially since it’s set in Colorado and has 14 books in the series at last count! So this is a series I can really binge, which is exactly what the current situation calls for. Now if only I could find a way to read without being interrupted by 10 questions about homework, three questions about where a toy is, or 4 questions about what snacks we have in the house…

One Hundred Reasons

Join international bestselling author Kelly Collins as she welcomes you to Aspen Cove, Colorado, in a brand-new series of fresh starts, hope, and happily ever afters…

When nurse Sage Nichols loses her favorite patient, she’s shocked to find out she’s inherited a bed and breakfast in a town she didn’t know existed. She travels to Aspen Cove intending to sell so she can hurry back to her life in Denver. Little does she know, she’s about to find everything she ever needed in the tiny mountain town with a big heart. For the first time, Sage finds herself in a place where caring for your neighbor is a way of life, and in her case, her new neighbor is the man of her dreams.

Cannon Bishop learned long ago that hope is a dangerous thing. Closed off from the world after a family tragedy, Cannon settles for a life as the owner of Aspen Cove’s only pub and the son to the town drunk. When Sage Nichols arrives, she brings with her the possibility that he could have so much more if he could open his heart.

Both Sage and Cannon struggle with loneliness and loss. As Sage steps in to save Cannon’s father from himself, Cannon’s walls come down, and suddenly he sees a brighter future of healing, hope, and peace…if only she will stay.
