The McGavin Brothers Series by Vicki Lewis Thompson
A Cowboy’s Strength (Book 1)
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Overall Rating: 4 (sXe)
Quick & Dirty summary: Zane McGavin hasn’t seen his childhood friend Mandy Fielding for almost a decade. While Zane isn’t quite sure what happened that made Mandy run away to New York, he knows that Montana is the only place he wants to call home. So Zane is surprised when he finds Mandy on the side of the road in need of some help. Their relationship becomes confusing as they move from old friends to lovers, despite living in two different states.
I love Vicki Lewis Thompson books, in part, because her writing is so smooth. The dialogue is great, the descriptions are vivid, and each character is unique and memorable. I’m not as familiar with Vicki’s contemporary romances, having grown up reading her Wild About You series. I am happy to say that this novel doesn’t disappoint. The plot was straightforward, heartfelt and relatively drama-free.
Zane is super hunky and sexy and if he was a real person I’d be all over him. He is a true gentleman and is my favorite character in the book. He doesn’t have the usual hang-ups of alpha men but that doesn’t make the sex scenes any less sexy. I had a much harder time liking Mandy. She is all over the place with her emotions and her responses and, honestly, I’m not sure she deserves Zane.
But probably one of the best features of the book is Mandy’s mom and Zane’s mom. As secondary characters they are very vivid. They both have their own personalities and back-stories and that’s part of what makes Vicki’s books come alive. She doesn’t write flat characters. I am really looking forward to seeing more of these two strong women in future books in the series.
My only regret is that the novel is on the shorter side. At 200 pages I read this super fast. But the pacing of the novel is great and I can’t wait until the next book in the series.
Is it worth buying? (Kindle $0.99 SALE)
Yes! It’s on sale people! Less than a dollar is a steal for a well-written book like this one.

If you like hunky men who take care of animals, then try Jill Shalvis’ Animal Attraction. It’s the second book in the Animal Magnetism series but it can stand-alone. I enjoyed reading about the hunky veterinarian.
